Advancing Women’s Rights in a Changing...

Development actors worldwide accept that advancing women’s rights and gender equality is not only a desirable goal, but a cornerstone of any successful sustainable development framework. Women and girls are in the public eye and recognised as key agents in development as never before. “Investing in women and girls” is increasingly heralded as a keystone strategy for women’s economic empowerment, and indeed, for broader development and economic growth. Variations on this discourse are coming from as diverse actors as the World Bank , Newsweek , and Walmart . Funding agencies and international NGOs have increasingly adopted the language of “investing in women” via new policies and programmes. Corporations are emphasising women...Read More

The Stark Reality of Climate Change

The Stark Reality of Climate Change

When I was in college I remember listening to the lyrics of the Age of Aquarius for the first time. The song struck a cord within me and the name of the band, The Fifth Dimension, an even deeper cord. "The moon is in the Seventh House and Jupiter aligns with Mars then peace will guide the planets and love will steer the stars. This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius." Astrologers believe that an astrological age affects mankind and influences the rise and fall of civilizations. Traditionally Aquarius is associated with electricity, computers, flight, democracy, freedom, humanitarianism, idealism, modernization, astrology, rebellion, nonconformity, veracity, perseverance and humanity. Invest in Women!

Let’s be honest. Even if some of us feel uncomfortable accepting it, Money IS power . Power to do what you want. Power to implement your own projects and see them grow. Power to be free and independent. And yet, the investment arena is still an extremely male-dominated world. In the United States only, women represent 15% of angel investors and 11% of investing partners at VC firms according to this infographic . Although women are highly active in the philanthropic world, giving millions of dollars each year, they account for only a small percentage of the world’s investors. This undeniable fact has massive consequences: On the local and national level, there is a lack of support networks to encourage women...Read More

By integrating social and environmental benefits in their business model, entrepreneurs at the grassroots can provide promising solutions to local sustainable development issues, including environmental protection, sustainable resource use, job creation and social equality. Those small-scale social and environmental entrepreneurs have the potential to reduce the vulnerability of many low-income communities to the impacts of climate change and help alleviate poverty within emerging, developing and the least developed nations.

The song the Age of Aquarius was written...Read More
