Why Support Networks Matter for Entrepreneurs

Why Support Networks Matter for Entrepreneurs

I was speaking with a friend this morning, an early-stage entrepreneur who has invested the past two years in her start-up. She has made progress- there is a product, a team, and some seed funding. But she still feels far away from the vision that drew her to launch the company in the first place. And there are many day to day challenges as an entrepreneur- from raising funding to dealing with uncertainty and motivating a team of people to work exceptionally hard for less than they could be making at an established company. We tout entrepreneurship as Europe's saviour and the source of growth for developed economies worldwide. We applaud the Steve Jobs of the world. We celebrate successes and acquisitions and IPOs. But we rarely...Read More

Social Good Summit was one of its kind events. It brought together the minds from around the world to focus on single subject matter. The Social Good Summit and the Importance of...

I have been fortunate enough to attend the  Social Good Summit  these past few days, a conference about social good that runs in parallel with UN week in the States. The conference provides an open platform for diplomats, entrepreneurs, business and civil society leaders to share their thoughts on the opportunities for social change. One of the recurrent themes was the importance of feeling a personal and emotional connection to an issue- in short, caring. During a pre-Summit breakfast, a discussion on HIV centred around the importance of putting AIDS back on the map as a global issue. The sense of urgency that once surrounded the issue is no longer there. As the disease has been "contained" to marginalised communities...Read More

The Power of Collaborative Innovation

Fifteen years ago, there was a wave of fresh talent in India’s IT sector. At the time, graduates focused heavily on using new economic opportunities and getting a feel of new ground. In the years that followed, this interest in technology led to a boom in shared technology spaces; primarily call centres, start-ups, service providers and consultancies. Despite this, a large number of those who worked in the IT sector were left dissatisfied because there were not enough opportunities to channel their creativity. The result of this echoed in every conversation about Indian IT on the global stage. Social Good Summit   – The Day After It’s been a week since the since the Social Good Summit and things have started to sink in. I would like to share a couple of thoughts that have accompanied me this past week. First, the role and function of the UN. What is its actual role with regards to the numerous incredible initiatives and projects that we heard about for three days? My personal impression, as shared by a couple of the attendees that I discussed this with, is that the UN is not the leader nor the initiator. So many remarkable ideas of private people and companies, countless initiatives to assist with the several and diverse morbidities in the world. While they do cooperate with the UN, the...Read More

Keeping the Social Good Summit Conversation...

The last three days have been a whirlwind of ideas, concepts, solutions, and of course innovation. There is no doubt that when you bring together the best minds in the world, that creative and courageous solutions will occur. But how do we continue the conversation after the summit? As an educator I often would start my day with my students with a quote. I would simply place the quote somewhere in the classroom and ask my students to reflect on the statement. What if we all reflected on a statement each day among colleagues, families, friends and peers?
