11 Ingenious Solar Projects Impacting the...

It's easy to take energy for granted, forgetting that throughout much of the world, a lack of power affects everything from business to education to matters of life and death. Approximately 1.5 billion people still don't have access to electricity worldwide, with an additional 1 billion having only intermittent access. By using the power of the sun — the ultimate natural resource — these issues can be ameliorated, if not solved. Scientists, social...Read More

Education for 2030 Now

Nelson Mandela once said that “education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” We are now in a position to make that weapon even more powerful. Scholarship on education and learning has been booming in the last few decades, and a rich seam of information and experience about optimizing learning has been opened up. There is no time to waste in mining this information to make the future a better place to live than the present. Children born in the last twelve months will graduate high school in 2030. It has become clear that the 21st century is one of rapid change, where the type of education a child receives will make an enormous difference to the outcome of their lives. Defining a World with New Power

Technology gives journalists new power. Instead of complaining about the dramatic shifts in our industry, we celebrate it because it provides new ways of solving age-old problems that allow journalists to go far beyond storytelling. In a country like the Philippines, where institutions are weak and corruption is endemic, we can capture the zeitgeist of a frustrated society, push action and help build institutions bottom-up. Which is exactly what we set out to do in Rappler . Using a patented user-engagement model, we link the main components into a cycle driving action. Content creation is amplified by social media, which allows engagement that leads to crowdsourcing. The most immediate easy action is to click how you...Read More

Mobile Health : A Step towards Quality Family...

Family planning has long been a key component of policies and planning across the health ambit in India. What quintessentially remains to be seen is the impact of these. Exploring dimensions of this singled out component of health and welfare, if it were to be analysed, the untraveled long road is still there. But yes so is the determined spirit and minds of so many who board that journey. Through myopic vision the concept of family planning would seem to have failed in controlling the population burden on the National Income and country’s GDP. The population has grown steadily and continues to do so till date. But for now let’s do the reverse and visualise the bigger picture. Let’s focus on the rate at which it is...Read More

75 million young people, one common issue:...

The International Labour Organisation has declared it a “time bomb”, the Davos leaders refer to it as a “disaster”, and the United Nations has called it “staggering”. These three concerning phrases, uttered by major global institutions, all seek to describe the same economic challenge: youth unemployment. Despite young people making up 17% of the world’s population, they account for more than 40% of the world’s unemployed; a sum total of more than 75 million young people. Let’s stop and conceptualise that for a second- that equates to a whopping 75 million young people. That’s three a bit times my country’s (Australia’s) entire population or enough young...Read More

800 Women Die Everyday in Pregnancy

Did you know that approximately millions of women die each year from pregnancy related complications? Did you also know that 99% of these deaths occur in developing countries? The biggest culprit here is high blood pressure during pregnancy (preeclampsia and eclampsia). And take a wild guess which health risk is on the rise in developing countries? Diabetes! It is already a known fact that diabetes and high blood pressure are intertwined. But why is it that so many of today's poor are becoming diabetic? Could it be because the cheapest food they can buy is starch based products like rice, potatoes and pasta? And guess what happens when our system becomes overloaded from eating foods high in starch? Well any doctor will tell you starch...Read More

Speaking in Chichewa, the hotline worker asks the caller for her name, whether she is pregnant, when she is due and what symptoms she's experiencing. With the help of a custom software program and spiral-bound manual, Namasala will recommend a plan of action — perhaps getting rest or visiting a medical professional — after a few minutes on the phone. Four Top Tips to Organize a Great +SocialGood...

The Social Good Brazil Program last year was launched at a great summit, we had more than 1 thousand in the seminar venue to an additional 10 thousand live stream access. This year we´re heading for a smaller summit in terms of audience in the seminar venue, as we´re focusing on a niche target public of Brazilian decision makers on the social innovation field, but we keep expecting great live stream access and we have almost the same amount of speakers this year compared to last year, taking into consideration it was a three-day seminar compared to an one-day this year. My tips to those interested in organizing great +SocialGood events/ meetups would be: Deliver value! Start by setting clear goals and target...Read More

We look at the literacy rate and the level of comfort with technology," says Gagnaire. MAMA relies heavily on focus groups, bringing in the whole spectrum of healthcare stakeholders into early conversations - from community health providers to...Read More

Reverse Innovation in Health

Reverse Innovation in Health

During the Social Good Summit, I had the privilege to interview Patty Mechael, Director of the mHealth Alliance, a public-private partnership to provide valuable health information through mobile phones. Mechael was an early proponent of mobile health (mHealth), writing her PhD on mHealth in Egypt, a country that only had 3% mobile penetration at the time. "Mobile health in general is a reverse innovation," says Mechael. The developed world was slow to adopt healthcare delivery through mobile because of prior investments in computers and electronic records. Developing countries had limited infrastructure in place and these lower barriers to entry helped mHealth take off. Mobile health has been used to provide services for a number...Read More
