Unleashing the Leadership Capacity of Young People

Unleashing the Leadership Capacity of Young People

On March 8 th , at the invitation of Synergos Board Member Kim Samuel, had the pleasure of attending University for a Night as one of the Distinguished Faculty.   Following an inspiring panel discussion about leadership with Paul Polman (CEO of Unilever), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (Minister of Finance for Nigeria), and Peggy Dulany of Synergos, I had the opportunity to lead a table discussion on the topic of “Unleashing the Leadership Capacity of Young People”. Our discussion led to key insights and recommendations that I am delighted to share on behalf of the group: a)  Exposure - Leadership capability is rooted in the ability to imagine the possibilities, for example a world without conflict. ...Read More

Library For All

Library For All

On a recent trip to Australia I happen to connect with someone from Library For All and got to learn first hand about what it's all about and what's happening.... A little more info: Library for All is a non-profit organization that exists to unlock knowledge to those without access to books in developing countries. To achieve this ambitious goal, Library For All is building a platform that will enable the delivery of ebooks to developing communities, at a much lower cost than building physical libraries. The content is accessed via mobile phone networks found across the developing world, and is made available on low-cost devices such as tablets, mobile phones and PCs. UX for Good 2014

UX for Good 2014

The  Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre  is built on the site of a mass grave, housing the remains of 250,000 Rwandans who were killed over three months in 1994. Like all such memorials, it is intended as an antidote to genocide itself – teaching us and moving us to ensure we will never again be detached and complicit. But, for the most part, we remain unchanged. Virtually every visitor to a genocide memorial or holocaust museum can attest to overwhelming feelings of sympathy, sadness and outrage. Schoolchildren and world leaders alike leave speechless. But most visitors can also attest that they did nothing substantively differently as a result. The profound feelings genocide memorials elicit are a powerful fuel. What...Read More

300 Million People Need Your Help, Are You In?

Last week in Paris marked the second meeting of the G20 Employment Taskforce- one of the six official working groups of the world’s premier economic and financial forum. At the St Petersburg G20 Summit in 2013, world leaders committed to come to Brisbane in 2014 with a concrete action plan referred to as a ‘comprehensive growth strategy’ that outlines the steps they will commit to taking to drive economic growth in their respective countries. Within each of these plans lies an ‘individual country employment plan’ that focuses on boosting employment and lifting participation. It’s the latter of these two strategies that the taskforce on employment is responsible for. As Chair of the G20 Youth Summit, I headed to Paris with a...Read More

What Happened at the “Reinvent the Toilet Fair:...

We saw a tremendous amount of progress at the 2014 “Reinvent the Toilet Fair: India” we held in New Delhi last month. Just 18 months after the first fair, our partners came to New Delhi with early versions of toilets that look like real commercial products. It was amazing to see so many ideas and technologies integrated into devices that can safely collect and processes human waste.
