Re-branding Africa

Africa is the poster child for poverty. It has been for decades and will probably continue to be as the scramble for resources is aggressively pursued. The global financial recession means donor funds are severely limited and the fact that the "trends de jour" are plenty; climate change, violence against women, governance and democracy, etc. - means that projects will have to enhance their branding to catch the attention of the donors. With this in mind, the portrayal of the African Paradox is highly strategized to employ sympathy while luring investors with innovative solutions promised to end this endemic or another. While the number one branding strategy is that of poverty, corruption and wars, there is a competing campaign to...Read More

RYOT NEWS:

To All Attending the Social Good Summit

Movers, shakers and world-changers, In a few days, we will be together. We will sit in awe of speakers and ideas, share laughs and philosophies over coffee, and focus on the best ways we can make the world better. Stand4 is young – only about a month old. So what business do we have sitting amongst the greatest minds in good? These are people who have changed industries, influenced policies, saved lives and created movements. And we’re only a month old. We haven’t done any of those things. Then we thought a little more – about the impact they’ve created, and where it came from. We’ve followed some of their stories from near inception. Cheered them on, supported their work, spread their message. And we realized – they...Read More

A caste system is a type of social structure which divides people on the basis of inherited social status amongst other considerations. Permit me to ultimately define the subject of my article “e-caste system” to mean a type of social media structure which divides people on the basis of an assumed plus perceived social media status. Caste is an elaborate and complex social system that combines elements of endogamy, occupation, culture, social class, tribal affiliation and political power. Could it be that the fun and playfulness usually associated with social media may have begun to embrace unwittingly, a brand new caste structure which I have succinctly termed “e-caste system”? Could it be that complex social...Read More

Corporate America finds itself in a predicament that can either be viewed as a threat or opportunity. Seen through the lens of fear, the conspiracy of multiple global social crises, fast changing social technologies, and rising consumer activism represent perhaps the greatest threat to longstanding business practices and leadership that large brands have ever faced. Viewed as an opportunity, these very same circumstances provide clear guidelines for how to build your brand reputation, establish a competitive advantage, and deepen customer engagement. How these same circumstances affect your company depends on how you choose to see the world. In the meantime the smartest marketers have made their decision. One of the most...Read More

Integrating Simplicity into Innovation

Thanks to @VivaDadwal, I have just finished reading a series of articles on reverse innovation in the healthcare sector. I was fascinated to learn that current antimalarials draw their origins from Chinese medicine and that variolation in Africa and Asia was a precursor to modern inoculation and vaccination. Clearly, the concept of reverse innovation is not new. And the beauty of innovation is that it can happen anywhere- from a Northern California garage to a township in South Africa. As long as a product or process meets a need in a new way, we should take it seriously and learn from it. I would go even further to say that we all need to adapt a "reverse innovation" mindset and learn from innovation under extreme resource-constraints.

Think Global, Act Local

As part of the ongoing conversation at Social Good Summit were three “Master Classes.” These were similar in format to the mainstream conference, but on a much more intimate level. Speakers spoke to roughly 30 people as opposed to a full auditorium. Small groups got to hear and ask questions of various executives, movement leaders, activists, etc. The best news I heard at the Master Class was that big companies and organizations are finally starting to listen locally. In other words, thinking globally, yet acting locally. While many big organizations are in the infancy stage of this process and are still planning, they have recognized the need for increased flexibility in their approach to philanthropy. While this includes...Read More

I live in Bangalore and like the thousands of urban middle-class Indians who migrate here every year, I have never truly felt the need to understand the complexity of the Indian political system or for that matter, to identify my role in it.
